River Road Loop

By Ray Parden

One of my favorite local rides is a loop on River Road (44)  from LaPlace on the east bank, then up river past the Veterans Memorial bridge at Gramercy  to the Sunshine bridge at Donaldsonville, then across to the west bank and back down to the Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge (310) at Luling and finally back up to LaPlace.

It’s an interesting mix of everything from nineteenth century plantations, Cajun cottages, old general stores and huge industrial plants.

On weekends and probably most days the traffic is really light which helps to make this a stress free ride.  Even though the speed limit is low the curvy road is a fun ride. The Sunday we made our loop there was an old restaurant open on each side of the river so you do have some dining choices .

B & C Seafood decor... Nice!

We stopped at the B & C Seafood Restaurant on the west bank in Vacherie.  It was a combination seafood market and restaurant.  The unpolished service was provided by a couple of young ladies  and the seafood was good and fresh.  I ordered the oyster dinner and Craig ordered the seafood platter which was only a dollar more but it was a whole lot more food.  If you stop here don’t expect “normal service” if they are busy as I received my dinner about 20 minutes before Craig got his, but it was totally worth it.  As the saying goes… Live to Ride, Ride to Eat!

Oak Alley Plantation

If you have time there are plantations, old churches and cemeteries to explore on this ride -on the east bank there is the San Francisco and  Poche Plantation, and on the west bank there is Oak Alley and Laura Plantation.

There is also the Waterford Nuclear Plant near Hahnville which is kind of cool.   After crossing the river back to the east bank you get to ride through the Bonnet Carr’e Spillway which is an overflow area for when the Mississippi river gets too high, there’s a nice view of the river there before you drop down into the spillway. This is a great way to spend a relaxing day.
